History
The approach from downtown Troy to the RPI campus was made in 1907 after the RPI’s Main Building was destroyed in the 1904 fire. Before its creation, administrators considered a few different building proposals, including merging with the Columbia University of Mines in NYC. However, the administrators decided to pursue building the approach and the city spent $40,000 on the staircase. The staircase remained a link between Troy and RPI as a continued symbol of support. However, the approach began deteriorating over time due to lack of city funds. The approach became so neglected that it had to be closed in the 1970’s due to dangerous conditions.
